Zhongdian (Shangari-la) routes

Where's Zhongdian
Shangri-la (香格里拉, Xiānggélǐlā), formerly known as Zhongdian (中甸, Zhōngdiàn) and sometimes 'Gyalthang' in Tibetan, is where you really start to breathe in the Tibetan world.
Why Zhongdian
If you cannot get to the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), Shangri-la is a good option with rich Tibetan culture, stunning grasslands, and large monasteries that do not require a special Tibet Travel Permit for foreigners.

Should I go on my own?
Since the opening of high-speed train and new airport, Shangarila has become a lot more touristy than decades ago, when you go to the main attractions, it's often flush with tourists. However, there are still hidden gems to be discovered, genuine routes and ways to avoid the crowd.
After being based in Yunnan for over a decade, the last two times I set foot in Shangarila, I realized that even for someone who knows their way around, it takes an effort to get away from the tourist trap. Considering the hidden gems in here, it's certainly a place not to miss, but it's very important to get oriented.
